You step out of the shower… and within minutes, your skin feels dry again.
Like the moisture you just added just… disappeared.
So you reach for lotion.
Maybe even reapply later.
And still—your skin feels tight, itchy, uncomfortable… sometimes even flaky.
It’s frustrating, especially when you feel like you’re doing everything right.
You’re buying the products.
You’re taking the time.
You’re trying.
So naturally, you start to wonder:
Is it my skin… or is it what I’m using?
Here’s the truth most people don’t realize:
If your skin still feels dry no matter what you use, it’s usually not just about moisture…
it’s about how your skin is being treated before and after you apply it.
Let’s walk through a few things that may be quietly working against your skin—and what to do instead.
Before we get into it, it’s important to understand this:
Dry, sensitive skin isn’t just about needing more product…
it’s about using the right kind of care in the right way.
Because even the best moisturizer won’t work the way it should if your skin has been stripped, irritated, or overworked.
Once you understand what’s actually causing the dryness, everything else starts to make more sense—and your routine becomes a lot more effective.
1. Know the Difference
A lot of people assume they have one issue, when it could actually be something different, which is why you should go to the dermatologist. There is a difference between Dry Skin, Skin Allergies, and Skin Sensitivity.
Dry skin, or Xerosis, is skin that is dry, white, and flaky (or "ashy"). It's most common on the arms and legs and can make other skin conditions worse.
Skin allergies are seen - redness, swelling, inflammation, bumps, etc. and are most common on the scalp, face, hands, and feet.
Skin sensitivity is felt - dryness, itchy, burning, tingling, etc. and can be felt on the face, arms, hands, and legs. The best way to determine if you have Xerosis (dry skin), sensitive skin, or skin allergies, is to be tested by a dermatologist.
2. Avoid Hot Baths/Showers
I know, it sucks right? Taking baths or showers in really hot water can feel really good and seem very relaxing; however, hot water encourages evaporation from the pores which leads to excessive drying of the skin.
Instead, bathe in tepid to warm water. It may take some getting used to, but in the long run, it will reduce the amount of water loss and cause less heat damage to the top outer layer of your skin. However, if you absolutely cannot get on board with warm water (trust me I totally get it!), then using a rich, creamy moisturizer (not lotion) immediately after your bath or shower while your skin is damp, not wet, is paramount and non-negotiable.
3. Avoid Over-Exfoliating
Using a loofah and/or exfoliating daily is damaging to your skin. It can remove too many layers of skin causing more damage.
Instead, bathe daily with a soft washcloth to gently cleanse your skin, and exfoliate no more than 2 times a week.
4. Avoid Deodorant and Antibacterial Detergent Bars
Deodorant bars and antibacterial cleansers such as Zest, Dial, and Irish Spring are made with detergents that can be too harsh for your skin. They also contain skin irritating highly concentrated fragrances.
Cleansers that are "antibacterial" usually contain chemicals that kill all bacteria, even the good bacteria your body needs to protect and heal itself.
Look for products that have more natural ingredients you’re familiar with and know you're not allergic to.
Additionally, look for products that have fragrance listed towards the bottom of the list. The lower on the list, the smaller the concentration in the final product, and the lower the chances of irritation.
5. Use a Humidifier at Night
In the winter months or if you live in dry heat, the cold air is much drier and harsher on your skin, especially if you live in a more arid climate like Nevada, California, or Arizona. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about Mother Nature, and moving to a tropical island may not be a feasible option, so to help combat dryness, invest in a humidifier and run that baby while you sleep.
Your skin will drink up the moisture in the air to help replace what Mother Nature snatched away, and if your hair is dry, she can get in on the moisture action too ... win, win!
Now that you know what to avoid, here’s the part that really changes things:
What you use on your skin daily matters just as much as what you stop using.
Your skin needs a routine that gently cleanses without stripping…
supports your skin barrier…
and actually helps lock in moisture so your skin stays soft—not just for a moment, but throughout the day.
That’s where choosing the right combination of products makes all the difference.
Using a gentle, nourishing soap followed by a rich, creamy body butter can completely transform how your skin feels—helping to reduce dryness, soothe irritation, and keep your skin feeling smooth, comfortable, and cared for.
Because at the end of the day…
You don’t just want skin that looks moisturized.
You want skin that feels soft, calm, and truly taken care of.

I’ve used body polish and scrubs before, I love that you put instructions on the label. I didn’t have to dip and scoop to pull it out, this is it! I could immediately tell the difference in my hands.
It wasn’t lumpy and messy. I didn’t have to clean my sink afterwards and I wasn’t left standing in hard clumps of sugar in my shower.

I love the body butter and bath bombs. I took a bath and used the bath bomb and when I got out I put on my body butter and I felt so relaxed. Even in my flannel pajamas, I felt so pretty!
If you’ve ever felt like no matter what you use, your skin is still dry, tight, itchy, or irritated… I know exactly how that feels.
I’m Joy, the founder and heartbeat behind Sweet Surrender.
I’ve struggled with sensitive skin all my life, constantly searching for something that would actually work without making things worse.
Growing up, my mom was a huge fan of “Zest” soap. At the time, it was supposed to be the best out there—but it left my skin dry, tight, itchy, and irritated. No amount of lotion could give me the relief I so desperately needed. She later switched to Ivory because it was “so pure it floats”… but all it did was float me right into dry, itchy misery.
For years, I couldn’t find anything that truly nourished my skin. I was always dry, uncomfortable, and yes… ashy. Until I finally decided to take matters into my own hands.
In 2015, after suffering a chemical burn on my scalp, I started researching natural ways to heal and restore my skin. It didn’t make sense to me to use more harsh, chemical-filled products to fix something that was already damaged. I knew there had to be a better way.
That journey led me to study and become certified in formulating bath and body care products, where I developed what is now my signature body butter—a simple, deeply nourishing formula designed to hydrate, soothe, and support even the most sensitive skin.
What started as a personal solution quickly became something bigger.
Because I realized… I wasn’t the only one struggling.
Now, after more than seven years as a certified soap maker, I create every product with intention—using gentle, plant-based ingredients to help women like you finally experience soft, comfortable, nourished skin without irritation.
Because you deserve more than temporary moisture.
You deserve to feel confident, cared for, and at ease in your skin—every single day.
