Self-Care isn’t about self-indulgence, it’s about self-preservation
Sounds a bit intense and serious, right?
At Sweet Surrender, we don’t take self-care lightly. We believe self-care is all about improving and maintaining your overall health and well-being.
Too often times, people mistake self-care as being selfish and indulgent, but is it? What is self-care, and what does it really mean?
Self-care is and looks very different for everyone which is why we believe it's a personal journey. It's not just one or two things you do once a week (if you remember) or a trip to the spa whenever you can get an appointment and then manage to set aside enough time from your schedule to go.
So what is it?
Well, let's break it right on down and see what it is and what it isn't!
What is Indulgence
When you think of the word indulgence, I venture to guess something negative immediately came to mind; am I right?
According to Merriam Webster, the true definition of the word indulge simply means to, "allow oneself to enjoy the pleasure of". How you fill in the blank can definitely be something unhealthy, but it can also be something vital to your overall health as well as your physical and mental wellbeing and that's exactly what we encourage.
What is Self-Preservation
Again, we turn to Merriam Webster for clarity on what preservation truly is and it is to, "maintain something in it's original state" and to "keep safe from harm or injury". There are a few more definitions but these two hit home for us.
Obviously we cannot preserve our original state because our bodies continually grow, evolve and change from the time we're born and continues to do so throughout our lives; however, we can preserve our physical, emotional, and mental health, and we can also take measures to protect our bodies from harm from all it's exposed to daily.
Our daily lives and schedules are very busy and quite hectic. You've probably grown so accustomed to it, you probably don't notice anymore until your body commands your attention with aches, sluggishness, and discomfort that it forces you take notice and slow down and take a break.
You're a career woman, you have meetings, a business and a household to run; you've got responsibilities, we get it, and we definitely understand.
So how can you practice self-care and self-preservation daily?
We believe you can practice self-care daily without interrupting and turning your daily life and perfectly executed routine upside down.
No Ma'am, there'll be none of that over here!
You take a shower daily, why not turn your daily cleansing ritual into a mind-calming experience by using beautifully scented soaps and/or adding a shower steamer for a truly relaxing or uplifting spa-like experience.
Make time to enjoy a long relaxing soak in a warm bubble bath to soothe your mind and tired, aching muscles and feet. We know you are fierce and flawless in your red bottoms, but trust, we know they take a toll on your feet and toes!
When you apply your favorite moisturizer, take time to really massage it into your skin. Give special attention to your shoulders, calves, hands, and feet. This will not only help with absorption for soft skin, but it becomes an opportunity to really enjoy a self massage. And who wouldn't enjoy a daily massage?
If you like to read, go to your quiet place when you know it will actually be quiet and light a candle, pour yourself a cup of soul-soothing tea (Moscato works too girl!) and pull out that book you've been meaning to read if only for 5 to 10 minutes. Doing this a few minutes a day can be a game changer.
You don't need big grandiose gestures to take care of yourself daily. It's the little things that mean so much, and when you do them regularly, they become your personal grand gestures that you find yourself looking forward to everyday.
Wouldn't you rather to go to bed looking and feeling beautiful and relaxed as you drift off to a peaceful sleep while looking forward to meditating during your morning spa-like shower and all the other little things you know are coming just for you, as opposed to going to bed tense and stressed about what the next day brings?
